ISA detainees to contest DAP polls

KUALA LUMPUR: Two Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders have confirmed that they will be contesting central executive committee (CEC) posts at the DAP national congress later this month.

Kota Alam Shah state assemblyman M. Manoharan, 47, and V. Ganabatirau, 35, will be doing so at the congress on Aug 23 and 24.

The duo, together with R. Kengadharan, 41, P. Uthayakumar, 47, and K. Vasantha Kumar, 35, are being detained under the Internal Security Act at the Kamunting detention centre.

Manoharan's wife, S. Pushpaneela, said she would be campaigning for her husband who is also the EHSAN branch chairman.

She, however, urged the media not to refer to him as a Hindraf leader as he was merely a legal adviser to Hindraf.

"My husband has always been a DAP man," she added.

A total of 58 candidates are expected to be vying for the 20 CEC posts.

DAP's Lim Kit Siang, Karpal Singh, Lim Guan Eng, Dr Tan Seng Giaw, Fong Kui Lun, Tan Kok Wai and M. Kulasegaran will be in the fray.

Karpal's sons, Gobind Singh Deo and Jagdeep Singh Deo, will also contest.

More than 900 delegates are expected to attend the congress.
