'Racist' teacher to undergo counselling

PETALING JAYA: The teacher who allegedly uttered racial slurs against a group of students will undergo counselling at the Selangor education department.

She would also temporarily carry out administrative duties at the department's counselling unit.

Education Ministry director-general Datuk Alimuddin Mohd Dom said the case was now considered closed after the students and their parents reached an amicable settlement with the teacher.

Two students from SMK Telok Panglima Garang recently lodged police reports against the teacher, alleging that she had made derogatory remarks about Indian students and that she had called them unflattering names.

In a statement, Alimuddin said the Kuala Langat district education office with the help of Senator T. Murugiah, had arranged for a meeting between the parties involved on Aug 5.

He said the disciplinary committee had also recommended that the teacher be slapped with a warning and transferred to another school soon.
