'Irresponsible few cannot derail 1Malaysia'

The actions of a few irresponsible people will not derail the '1Malaysia' concept, the brainchild of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, said MIC president S Samy Vellu.

He said the MIC will give its full and undivided support to the prime minister to ensure the success of the concept because it (the concept) has the full backing of all Malaysians.

"I want to assure the prime minister that we (the MIC) will stand by him and support him all the way.

"The prime minister is steadfast in ensuring the '1Malaysia' concept moves ahead, and it will not be dented nor derailed by the irresponsible words and actions of a few," he said in a statement today, commenting on statements by several opposition leaders that the 1Malaysia concept could be derailed following irresponsible actions by certain quarters.

The MIC president also expressed appreciation for the efforts taken by Najib in promoting racial unity among the various races in the country.

He said the '1Malaysia' concept was a policy devised by the prime minister to strengthen the unity among the various races while maintaining their cultural and religious diversity.

"So, the question of it (1Malaysia) being derailed does not arise because it is accepted by the people," he added.

"We appreciate the prime minister's prompt action in dealing with a latest incident that could have affected racial unity if no action was taken," he said, referring to the alleged "racist" remarks made by a former aide to the prime minister.

Does not reflect Najib's views

Nasir Safar had allegedly uttered "seditious" words about the Chinese triggereing condemnation from many political parties including the MIC as well as non-governmental organisations.

Following his alleged remarks, Nasir apologised and tendered his resignation as the prime minister's special officer.

Samy Vellu said as the allegations made by Nasir are serious, the MIC will allow the police to probe the matter.

He reiterated that the remarks reportedly made by Nasir do not reflect Najib or the government's views.

"I do not wish to say anything further, except to say let the police do their job," he added.

A slew of police reports were filed against Nasir after the incident, and the police yesterday confirmed that the former aide is being investigated for sedition.
